Project Description: "The Last Train" Holocaust Memorial

Project Overview: The project "The Last Train" is a competitive design for a Holocaust victims' monument located in Carnot Place, Lyon, developed collaboratively by a team representing Israel, Moscow, and Milan. The monument aims to commemorate the deportation of Jews from Lyon to Auschwitz via train No. 14,166 in 1944, recognized as the last train from Lyon.

Concept and Design Elements:
  1. Symbolism of the Rails: The design reflects the significance of the rails associated with train No. 14,166.
  2. Representation of Destruction: The project embodies the destruction of lives, society, and individuality during the genocide.
  3. Historical Maps: The design incorporates maps focusing on:
  • The railroad map of Europe.
  • The infrastructure of Nazi facilities.
The concept correlates the monument's construction site with data from these historical maps. The design features two memorial options: solid concrete blocks and embossed corten steel profiles. The corten design, titled "Broken Rails," advanced to the top five finalists among 98 submissions.
